THE streets and sidewalks of Mandaue City may soon be cleared of mendicants and migrant carolers, among others.
This, after the City Council approved during its regular session on Monday, November 14, 2022, proposed resolution 205-2022 authored by Councilor Jimmy Lumapas, requesting the City Social Welfare and Services Office and the Mandaue City Enforcement Unit, through the Office of Mayor Jonas Cortes, to rid the streets and sidewalks of loiterers.
Lumapas’ resolution also wants to get rid of families who have made elevated walkways their home.
The councilor said these people remain fixtures in the cityscape despite aggressive efforts of proper authorities to spruce up the city’s image by getting rid of them.
“To showcase the economic rise of the City and to create a civilized and sound environment, it is but fitting and proper to uproot this illegal activity that tarnishes the City’s good image,” his resolution reads.
He pointed out that mendicants, migrant carolers, mentally disturbed people and people who call elevated walkways their home have proliferated in the city since the start of the Yuletide season.
“A massive influx of these migrants from the rural areas and Mindanao who are carolers for the upcoming Yuletide season are mostly found along the busy streets of A.S. Fortuna, UN Avenue, M.C. Briones, North Reclamation Area, A.C. Cortes and Highway Seno,” he said. (MKG)
