THE Lapu-Lapu City Council has passed a resolution requesting the City Environment and Natural Resources Office and the Solid Waste Management Board to launch an annual clean and green competition among the city’s 30 barangays.

Authored by Councilors Annabeth Cuizon and Celestino Aying, the move aims to improve cleanliness and orderliness in the city.

The councilors noted that waste management remains to be an issue that needs to be addressed despite the presence of local and national legislation.

“As a tourist destination and to maintain the sustainability of our city, we need to ensure that waste mamagement is an integral part of our lifestyle,” part of the resolution said.

Cuizon and Aying noted that preserving cleanliness and orderliness of the city entails social participation, adding that it should be a unified undertaking among the city, barangay officials, and constituents as well as the different sectors.

“We endeavor to have garbage-free streets and corners, clean waterways, graffiti-free infrastructure, beautified sidewalks and center islands,” the councilors said.

They believe that incentivizing such endeavors can foster healthy competition and improve cleanliness and orderliness in Lapu-Lapu City.

Among the criteria for the said competition will include over-all cleanliness, orderliness, greening and beautification, social participation through barangay ordinances crafted and implemented, education and information campaign, proper waste management, presence or absence of graffiti, initiative for rainwater harvesting facilities, and maintenance of public buildings.
