SOUTH Korean book authors shared to Cebuanos their culture and tradition by donating storybooks to the Cebu City Public Library Thursday, Nov. 24, 2022.
Cebu City Librarian Rosario Chua told SunStar Cebu that 100 storybook titles were donated by the South Korea-based authors as part of the country’s observance of the 88th National Book Week.
Chua said that the authors will provide translations to the books so that Filipinos can understand and appreciate the stories.
The donated books also contained illustrations which are advantageous to children, especially those who are visual learners, she added.
“In the future, we can have an activity that will encourage and ignite their interest and create stories through using these pictures,” said Chua.
Aside from the turnover of books, a storytelling activity was also held in the public library wherein 25 children from Barangay Santa Cruz and Childlink Learning Center participated.
Chua said that this is not the first time that foreign authors have donated books in the library. The library a corner specifically for Japanese books after a group of Japanese nationals visited and donated books to the city.
In his speech, Acting Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia said that despite the advancement of technology wherein information can be searched anywhere, there is still nothing that can beat the feeling of reading books.
“Nothing beats the magic that comes with reading an actual book. To date, no technology can replicate the feeling of flipping through papers nor can it simulate the distinct book smell,” said Garcia.
Garcia then expressed his gratitude to the South Korean authors who contributed to the collection of the Cebu City Public Library and to the education and imagination of the next generation.
