WATER color, acrylic, latex, and pastel could be some of the most common media used for painting. How about using squid ink in coming up with masterpieces?

This Davao Oriental-based artist has found beauty in creating jaw-dropping art pieces with the help of organic inks.

Pastor Marvin Lorzano Tiberio has been painting since he was 10 years old. He is no stranger to water-based painting materials because these were his first media when producing his first obras. However, he, later on, realized that these were expensive, making such inaccessible to him.

“Before, when I don’t have clients yet, scarcity and expensiveness of artist’s painting medium, but now because of its uniqueness and rarity [sic],” he recalled.

By going organic, so to speak, the 44-year-old painter has proven that there is more to squid ink, turmeric, achuete, and blue ternate than being part of certain people’s regular diet. With this, what he creates has become more interesting.

“The resourcefulness I think is what makes it interesting, and the difficulty to manipulate the medium. I also add the eco-friendliness of the output,” he quipped.

Tiberio, whose usual subjects are people and their different activities, shared that his uniqueness as an artist lies on two things: “Because I’m a full-time pastor, second to that is I’m the only artist who uses organic inks I personally processed.

By being a painter for over three decades now, he has embraced the motto “maximizing minimum resources”, which, according to him, is a borrowed thought from a fellow pastor.

“An artist is not measured by the expensive medium or tool he uses, but it’s how he uses every available resource he can find and turn it to become an archival work of art,” he noted.

For him, a real artist is someone who is a communicator of beauty. Meanwhile, he emphasized that a piece of art can only be real if “it can communicate to the soul of its viewer.”

Tiberio, being an experienced painter and a true artist by heart, has three important lessons to share. First, the artist must be grateful and give credit to God, to whom glory belongs. Second, the artist must never compromise art for money and recognition. Third, the artist must discover his/her own uniqueness.

The pastor-artist further revealed that after eight years of pastoral ministry in South Cotabato, he has gotten acquainted with the T’boli and B’laan tribes, which explains why some of his paintings highlight a “recollection of my acquaintances with them.”

Among his clients are the Davao Oriental Provincial Tourism Office, Philippine National Police 11, friends, and even strangers who came across his Facebook page and got awed by the posted samples.
