THE Cebu City Government is considering the possibility of tapping vloggers or social media influencers to strengthen its campaign in promoting proper waste disposal and recycling.

Engr. Reymarr Hijara, executive director of the City’s Solid Waste Management Board, said the initiative will be jointly done with the City’s Public Information Office (PIO) to make the community understand the interventions undertaken by the City Government against issues on garbage and flooding.

During the PIO’s Panaghisgot Forum on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022, Hijara said the social media ability of the youth, especially internet influencers, can be of good help in spreading the campaign of the government.

Modern tech to address garbage

The City Government is also venturing into the use of modern technology to address garbage problems like waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities and material recovery facility (MRF), he added.

Last Sept. 22, the City Government issued a notice of award to a private firm for the construction of a P4.8-billion WTE facility that can process 800 tons of garbage per day to generate electricity.

Just recently, an Australian-based company sent an unsolicited proposal to the City Government for the construction of a WTE facility that is capable of producing 50 megawatts of renewable energy.

Hijara further said that the City is now exploring possible locations in the north and south districts for the creation of an MRF wherein garbage that can still be recycled will be sorted out.

On Saturday, Dec. 3, the City Government will conduct another city-wide clean-up drive that will be participated by all 80 barangays, City Hall employees, private stakeholders and civic groups.
