A TOTAL of 140 unclaimed remains of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) have been buried over the past months.
The 140 cadavers were among the 176 bodies that were left unclaimed at the Eastern Funeral Services.
Of the 176 bodies, ten were buried in the early week of November, 60 last week and 70 on Friday, December 2, 2022.
A Mass was held before they were buried at the apartment tombs of the New Bilibid Prison Cemetery in Muntinlupa.
Bureau of Corrections Deputy Director General for Reformation Doctor Ma. Cecilia Villanueva said they reached out to the families of the deceased inmates but none of them attended the burial.
She said some communicated with them but only to get their relative’s death certificate.
Some of the 36 remaining cadavers, she said, have already been claimed.
The issue on the unclaimed cadavers surfaced amid the conduct of investigation on the death of Jun Villamor, who was the alleged middleman in the killing of veteran radio broadcaster Percy Lapid.
The unclaimed cadavers are recent deaths or inmates who died not more than three months ago.(SunStar Philippines)
