THREE modern jeepneys under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) are set to ply inter-provincial routes in Davao Region after it was launched on December 7.

The units are Class 2 modern public utility jeepneys (MPUJ) that will ply the route of Digos City, Davao del Sur to the municipality of Sta. Maria in Davao Occidental and vice versa.

The MPUJs have a seating capacity that can comfortably accommodate 22 passengers. The units are also fully airconditioned and equipped with a WiFi connection, CCTV, and dashboard cameras.

Sta. Maria Mayor Claude Benjamin Bautista II said the modernized units will make travel easier and faster for residents of Sta. Maria and Digos City.

“Mas efficient na ang pag byahe diri (Traveling will be more efficient from now on),” Bautista said during the launching event in Sta. Maria.

The fare for the MPUJ will cost P14 for the first four kilometers and P88.75 for the whole Sta. Maria - Digos City and vice versa route.

The initial units are three out of the 12 Class 2 MPUJ by the Mindanao Transport Service Cooperative (Mintranssco) that will ply the said route under the PUVMP. It is also the first fleet of modernized units in the municipality of Sta. Maria

The launching in Sta. Maria was led by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in Davao Region (LTFRB-Davao) with Sta. Maria mayor Bautista, municipal vice mayor Joyce Mariscal, LTFRB-Davao regional director Nonito Llanos III, and officials and representatives of Mintranssco.

Earlier this year, the first fleet of modernized public utility vehicles in Davao Region was launched in Digos City with seven new MPUJs that will ply Brgy. Sinawilan to Central Terminal (New Business Center) via Super Highway (Loop); and Central Business District (CBD) to Aplaya Bus Terminal (Loop) via Barangay Tres de Mayo in Digos City.

It also included routes in Davao del Sur particularly Zone III, Digos City to Inawayan, Sta. Cruz Route & vice versa; and Zone III, Digos City to Upper Bala, Magsaysay Route and vice versa.

On December 1,Llanos said that they are aiming to enact the PUVMP into a law that will mandate modernizing public utility vehicles in the country.

"This program was created through a department order of the Department of Transportation but then with the new board and the administration that we have, there is already a plan to institutionalize it,” Llanos said during an interview with the media. ICM
