Lim: Off-key

Lim: Off-key

A guy has been singing off-key on karaoke in the last 30 minutes. I sit here wondering when he’ll stop because he sounds really awful. On the bright side, if he’s singing, he’s probably enjoying himself. And that should count for something.

You have to give him credit for trying.

We all know people who talk about everything they want to do but never take action. That’s how you never get anything done in your life. That’s how you never get anywhere you want to be. Inaction can be debilitating.

Because you spend your days wishing not doing. You spend your days wondering what it’s like out there but never really take even one step to get out there. You spend your days cowering in fear instead of courageously taking that leap of faith.

Do you think she’ll go out with me? You’ll never know if you never ask. Do you think I have a chance? You’ll never know unless you try. Do you think I’ll ever get there? You’ll never know unless you take the first step.

It’s the inability to accept failure as a possible result of any endeavor that causes inaction. If you’re afraid to fail then you’ll never try. And that is certain failure. There is zero possibility of success when you never try.

But if you accept failure as a possibility then you have nothing to lose by trying to succeed, just everything to lose by never trying, at all.

The status quo is safe but to stay there is to stagnate. Transfixed by the safety of the harbor, a sailor fails to become a sailor if he never ventures out to sea.

To live means to experience joy, pain, success, heartbreak, triumph, failure. Can we say we are alive if we are afraid to live?

I sit by a busy street most of the day and during the holidays, even evenings offer no respite. Some off-key singing usually wafts through my windows.

Believe it or not, the guy’s still at it. Going strong. And louder this time. Oh, wait. Now, he’s been joined by another guy. Someone just as off-key. So now, it’s awful multiplied by two.

Their singing is not music to my ears. But they seem to be having a great time. And that should count for something.

So, I’m going to bear down, bite my lip, and find it in my heart to appreciate two guys simply living their best lives. Because they’re certainly better off than the rest of us, still slaving away at this time. Or maybe, it’s just me. I know I can hardly keep my eyes open.

Never knew such profound thoughts could invade my sleep-deprived brain after just an hour of listening to such ghastly singing. See how much you can learn when you listen?

Even singing off-key counts for something because it’s better than wishing, wondering, planning. It’s doing. It’s trying. It’s taking that leap of faith. It’s finding the courage to live. Even off-key.
