THERE is a great potential for durian fruits from Davao City that is exported to Australia, the Australian Ambassador to the Philippines said.

Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Hae Kyong Yu said that there is a great prospect for the market of durian in Australia to grow.

“Australia has just 25 million people so it’s not a big country as the Philippines. The durian market is not huge but there is potential to grow... Australia is a multicultural society with immigrants like me living there we also have big Chinese and other groups and they love durian,” Yu said during an interview with the local press at Dusit Thani Davao on December 9, 2022.

According to the ambassador during her visit to a durian farm, the demand for the fruit overseas is so great that they cannot supply the demand for durian in other countries.

Durian exported to Australia is in the form of frozen durian of the Puyat variety and these come from Davao City.

Yu said the demand can influence farmers to shift to durian as conditions here in Davao is conducive to quality durian fruits.

“We know you grow bananas too but you have some problems with bananas, with some sort of disease I learned yesterday that those diseases don’t affect durian you can actually be very healthy and tasty durian on the soil where bananas won’t survive," Ambassador Yu said.

She said considering the demand for durian worldwide farmers can think of shifting to growing durian on farms. PIA-DAVAO
