GLF 2022 highlights pandemic recovery

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO The Giant Lantern Festival (GLF) set on December 17 will return to a face-to-face competition this year.

This was officially announced by GLF 2022 Executive Committee Chairperson Jun Pineda yesterday morning.

In the past two years, GLF was held through a blend of digital and limited face-to-face schemes due to Covid-19 restrictions.

It was also held as a friendly exhibition and not a competition among participants.

“This year, we are not only gonna meet each other in person for the first time in two years, but we will also bring back the competition among our participants,” said Pineda.

The number of participants this year also increased to 10 including barangays Bulaon, Calulut, Del Pilar, Dolores, Pandaras, San Juan, San Nicolas, Sta. Lucia, Sto. Niño and Telabastagan.

Bigger prizes also await winners with the third placer receiving P100,000; second placer getting P200,000; and the grand winner having P300,000.

City Tourism Officer Ching Pangilinan said the GLF 2022 will highlight the pandemic recovery journey of San Fernando.

She said it will be an addition to the love, hope, and faith-themed messages usually showcased by the 20-feet lantern entries in the past year.

“Our giant lanterns have always surprised us with messages about social concerns and this year, they will be giving us a glimpse of the journey to Covid-19 recovery, especially from the point of view of the lantern industry,” Pangilinan said.

Aside from the main competition to be held at the Robinsons Starmills, exhibition nights will also be held from December 18 to January 1 in the same venue.

Spectators can also witness the festival competition via live streaming on various social media accounts such as the City Information Office and Philippine Information Agency.
