MIXED Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Jestoni Borres showed that he stands out not only in the cage but also on the mat after submitting Eid Daham in the main event of Strive CCA-PFC NoGi Grappling Invitational on Dec. 11 at the Strive CCA Gym in Mandaue City.
Borres of Cebu Jiu Jitsu forced fellow blue-belt Daham of 98BJJ with a kimura in the 1:16 mark of their grappling match.
Borres is known for his stand up game inside the cage because of his boxing background. He’s now improved his all-around game and a submission win over a former Asian Jiujitsu Federation medalist showed his quality of Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ).
Visiting fighters Vincent Limpot and JM Calubag of Bohol Jiujitsu won their respective matches by submission.
Limpot submitted Survival MMA’s Bong Pates in the 1:43 mark, while Calubag forced Jiu Jitsu Method’s Jamieboy Fabula to tap in the 2:49 mark.
Macdom Malawi of Malawian MMA/Fabricio beat Janssen Canturias by overtime in the main card.
Veteran MMA fighters Lemuel Maglinte of Jiujitsu Methods and Arnel Ylanan of Checkmat Cebu/Ronin figured in a draw in their “Champion vs. Champion” exhibition bout.
In the preliminary bouts, Checkmat Cebu/Ronin’s Odie Lejarde submitted Enrique Sanchez of Fraction Jiu Jitsu by an armbar; former pro pug and MMA fighter Marjo Borres of Cebu Jiujitsu tapped out Jason Mores of Malawian MMA/Fabricio with a kimura; Jiu Jitsu Method’s EJ Patron forced Cebu JiuJitsu’s Lourence Pendejito with a rear-naked choke in what was deemed the “Fight of the Day;” Fraction Jiu Jitsu’s Mio Tayurang defeated Jiu Jitsu Method’s Kenneth Abuzo by overtime; Harold Tabalino of Checkmat Cebu/Ronin submitted Malawian MMA/Fabricio’s Daniel Corporal via an armbar; and Checkmat Jiujitsu/Ronin’s Von Alquisalas won by fastest escape over 98BJJ’s Dennis Augis.
“We, along with the support of the local and other BJJ academies, hope that events like this will only get better each year—while staying true to its goal—to bring out the spirit of healthy competition and camaraderie between grapplers and teams,” said event organizer Chris Cabang.
Cabang is looking to hold another grappling event either in January or February.
It will be a bigger tournament, wherein fighters from other areas in the Visayas and in Mindanao will be invited.
