CEBU’S grandest annual football festival, Thirsty Football Cup, finally makes its comeback in 2023 after being derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 17th edition of the Thirsty Football Cup will be on Feb. 10 to 12 at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).

“The interest is there so we are expecting an overflowing number of participating teams. But unfortunately, teams will be limited, and we will eventually turn down some teams. It will be first come, first served. The interest will come from the World Cup happening and the two years plus that we haven’t had football. We assume that the teams (that registered in 2020) will be back to join but there are still limitations,” said Pages Holdings Inc. vice president and Cebu City Sports Commission chairman John Pages in a virtual press conference yesterday.

The tournament will only cater to a limited number of teams from 16 different divisions – Players 10 (16 teams), Players 9 (20 teams), Players 11 (20 teams), Boys 13 (20 teams), Girls 13 (20 teams), Boys 15 (20 teams), Girls 15 (20 teams), Boys 17 (20 teams), Girls 17 (20 teams), Boys 19 (20 teams), Girls 19 (20 teams), Mixed Open (10 teams), Ladies Open (16 teams), Men’s Open (40 teams), 40 Above (10 teams), 50 Above (10 teams), and Soccer Moms (10 teams).

Registration of the 17th Thirsty Football Cup will kick off on Dec. 20 and will end on Jan. 23, 2023. Registration will be purely online.

The 17th Thirsty Football Cup was supposed to be in 2020, wherein it drew almost 300 teams. However, the tournament was postponed because of the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic in the Philippines.

The Thirsty Football Cup started in 2003 with organizers Neil Montesclaros and Chad Songalia, teaming up with the Thirsty brand to start a football festival for football players and enthusiasts.

Through the years, the Thirsty Football Cup has become the biggest annual football fiesta not only for Cebuanos but also for visiting football clubs from different areas of the Philippines.

“We’ll be back next year with a bang,” assured Songalia. “We are expecting a huge number of teams. We’ve had a lot of inquiries from teams.”
