Martin beats Nantapech to win vacant reg’l crown

UNBEATEN Carl Jammes Martin put on another impressive performance as he demolished former world title challenger Komgrich Nantapech in the second round to win the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Pan-Pacific super bantamweight belt at the CCDC Gym in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Martin came into the fight with the intention of knocking out Nantapech. He landed a solid one-two combination that rocked Nantapech in the opening round.

The 23-year-old Martin continued where he left off and landed a couple of three-punch combinations that bothered Nantapech in the second stanza.

Martin finally dropped Nantapech with a solid left uppercut-left hook combination. Nantapech was able to beat the referee’s count but Martin immediately swarmed on him with some heavy bombs.

Nantapech was able to survive the onslaught momentarily but Martin threw a right straight-left straight combination that sent the 33-year-old Thai to the canvass.

This time, Nantapech didn’t bother to stand up and was counted out in the 2:36 of the second round.

Martin made quick work of what should have been his stiffest competition. He remained undefeated with a record of 21-0 with 17 knockouts.

Nantapech, on the other hand, saw his winning streak end at nine and suffered his first loss in five years. He fell to 31-6 with 22 knockouts.

Martin is now a step closer to a world title after winning another regional title. He’s currently ranked No. 7 by the IBF, wherein Murodjon Akhmadaliev is the current titleholder.

Martin is also ranked No. 9 by the World Boxing Organization, No. 13 by the World Boxing Association and No. 15 by the World Boxing Council.
