THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has increased the number of combat personnel in Eastern Visayas following the recent deployment of the elite 4th Scout Ranger "Masigasig" Battalion (4SRBn) to the region.

"I am indeed grateful to the higher headquarters for sending one of the finest battalions from our elite force to augment our forces here in Eastern Visayas. Your expertise in combat tested by time will surely contribute to the Division's campaign against decades-long insurgency,” said Major General Camilo Ligayo, commander of the 8th Infantry Division (8ID) based in Catbalogan City, Samar.

"I urged you to be vigilant as you join our fight against the communist terrorist in Eastern Visayas. I trust that everyone will remain mission-oriented, respect human rights, and adhere to international humanitarian law and the rule of law as you proceed to your area of operations," Ligayo added.

According to Ligayo, the 4SRBn made “significant accomplishments” against communist rebels operating in Caraga Region.

They also contributed to the five-month-long battle against Isis-Maute group in the Liberation of Marawi City in 2017.

The said scout ranger battalion also took part in Zamboanga Siege and Mamasapano incident against BIFF in Mindanao.

“Prior to their deployment to Eastern Visayas, the 4SRBn underwent battalion retraining in Australia to further enhance their capability in air-to-ground combat operations and small unit operations,” said Captain Jefferson Mariano, 8ID spokesperson.

In a statement, Mariano said the deployment of 4SRBn “will play a significant role in the overall campaign of the 8ID” against the rebel group in the region.

Meanwhile, Calbayog City Mayor Raymund Uy expressed his “full support” on the arrival of additional troops in Eastern Visayas.

"We are hoping this unit will greatly help our 8ID," Uy said.

The new scout ranger battalion will be deployed in Northern Samar, which is said to be the stronghold of the rebel groups in the region. (SunStar Philippines)
