A GRADUATE of the Mandaue City College (MCC) who placed ninth in the October 2022 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) has been guaranteed a position by the Mandaue City Government.

Mayor Jonas Cortes said on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022, that he has offered Sheryl Etorma, 37, a position at City Hall or at MCC.

Etorma was among those who ranked ninth in the October 2022 LET’s elementary level exams. According to Cortes, Etorma is MCC’s first topnotcher since the founding of the city college back in 2005.

Etorma graduated with the honor of magna cum laude from MCC in January this year. He graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd).

Aside from Etorma, 12 other education graduates from other Cebu-based schools also made it to the Top 10 of the October 2022 LET.

Other topnotchers from Cebu are Janece Gomera Miano of the University of the Visayas (UV) who ranked fourth; Diandra Bolo Trasona of the Cebu Normal University (CNU) and Faith Gayle Manubag of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (fifth place); Loi Canino of the Toledo Gullas College, Jenelyn Cordero of CNU, Evangeline Esconde of Cebu Technological University-Moalboal campus and Janna Faye Llanos of the University of Cebu in Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue (UCLM) (ninth place); Adielyn Cator of CNU, April Joy Gargasiran of UCLM, Niña Mae Paglinawan of Consolacion Community College, Janine Pilapil of CNU and Ma. Nida Suares of UV’s Dalaguete campus (tenth).

Cortes also thanked Etorma for bringing pride to Mandaue City and being an inspiration to her fellow MCC students.

For her part, Etorma said she was glad of the offers, but she stated that she still has to weigh them thoroughly. However, she said her heart is always for MCC.

“I really appreciate the mayor’s offer that he recognized my achievement. I feel that I am also needed at Mandaue City College,” Etorma said in Cebuano.

Etorma said she is still on cloud nine for her recent achievement and still thinks it is unbelievable. She said it was a double blessing for her as she is also set to get married soon.

She said that while reviewing, she only thought of just passing the LET.

She also narrated her struggles while studying at MCC and working at the same time to support her family.

“When my father died, I became the breadwinner being the eldest of five siblings. I needed to let my siblings graduate from school first before I could finish my studies,” Etorma added.

Pressure

Meanwhile, Dr. Lilibeth Mayol, the acting MCC administrator, said Etorma’s success is also adding pressure for them to produce more LET topnotchers soon.

Mayol said they were very happy with the recent LET turnouts and vowed to give MCC’s students quality education despite their limited resources.

In the October 2022 LET, MCC garnered a 64.29 passing percentage for Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) and 67.80 percent for BEED.

This is over 10 percent higher than the average passing percentage set by the Professional Regulation Commission, which is about 50 percent.

MCC currently has a current population of 2,200 students.
