BACOLOD City Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran urged the authorities to solve the killing of the general manager of Northern Negros Electric Cooperative (NONECO) at 16th Lacson Street, Barangay 7, in the city on Wednesday, December 21.

“Our police should double its efforts to identify and arrest the suspects” in the killing of Atty. Danny Pondevilla, a resident of Providencia Subdivision, Barangay Mansilingan, Familiaran said Thursday, December 22.

He said it’s a big challenge to the city’s law enforcers to solve the killing.

“It’s very difficult to solve the case if we don’t have witnesses. The police should intensify its intelligence network. We are hopeful that it will be solved the soonest possible time,” he said.

Investigation showed that Pondevilla was inside his vehicle when unidentified assailants on board a motorcycle fired at him. He sustained a gunshot wound to the back portion of his head and died on the spot.

Police recovered from the scene an empty shell of .45 caliber pistol.

Lieutenant Jonito Pastrana, commander of Police Station 2, earlier said they are looking at work or love triangle as possible motives for the killing of Pondevilla.

Pastrana said Pondevilla, who attended a Christmas party near the area, was about to go home with his co-worker, whose name was withheld.

Pondevilla, who was allegedly under the influence of intoxicating liquor, parked his car at 16th Lacson Street when he was attacked by the unidentified assailants.

Pondevilla's co-worker reported the incident to the police station hours after the incident.

Pastrana said Pondevilla's co-worker and a male person who went to the area underwent a paraffin test Wednesday.

He said they have no lead yet on the identities of the assailants.

Pondevilla was also a former acting general manager of Central Negros Electric Cooperative (Ceneco).

Meanwhile, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)-Negros Occidental chapter, in a statement, said they are saddened by the fatal shooting of Pondevilla.

“We condemn in the strongest possible way the killing of our brother lawyer. Once again, we call upon the authorities, including the police to exert every legal means to identify the suspect and to bring the perpetrator to justice,” they said.

“We mourn the loss of Pondevilla and extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family and friends. An assault to any member of the legal profession is an assault to the entire community. We will continue to be vigilant. We will continue to pursue our goal to let the rule of law prevail,” they added.*
