TWO fishermen died, while six others survived when their fishing boat capsized off the waters of Barangay Manglit, Pintuyan, Southern Leyte early Sunday morning, December 25, 2022.
The fatalities were Rowel Dialel, 50, and Amay Paglinawan, 49.
Authorities identified the survivors as Gelermo Habagay, 30; Tomy Deskarten, 46; Garry Deskarten, 47; Romeo Abalida, 26; Ariel Talido, 29; and Kenneth Brigole, 24.
All were residents of San Antonio Jasaan, Misamis Oriental, according to the responding unit from Pintuyan Municipal Police Station.
Initial reports said the capsized fishing boat was boarded by eight fishermen who were delivering their catch at the said place.
“They did not return yet to Mindanao because of bad weather and big waves and decided to rest and anchored their fishing boat approximately 100 meters away from the shoreline,” the police said.
However, sudden strong winds carrying big waves caused the boat to capsize.
The six fishermen were safely rescued and temporarily under the custody of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office-Pintuyan.,
The two other victims were brought to Pintuyan District Hospital and declared dead on arrival by Dr. Leana Ordez, the attending physician. (SunStar Philippines)
