Domingo wins 2nd straight bout in Japan, knocks out Tomioka

ESNETH Domingo got another huge win in Japan after knocking out Japanese prospect Kosuke Tomioka last Monday, Dec. 26, 2022, at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

Domingo targeted Tomioka’s body in the opening round and landed with success. Tomioka landed a straight right that caught Domingo’s attention.

In the second round, Domingo started to dictate the pace of the fight and landed his power shots.

After a fiery exchange in the opening part of the third, Tomika gained momentum and tried to finish off Domingo with a barrage of punches. Domingo suffered a gash above his left eye after an apparent accidental clash of heads.

In the fourth, Tomioka caught Domingo with a left straight that dropped him to the canvass. Domingo was able to beat the referee Koji Tanaka’s count. However, Tomioka was very aggressive and tried to finish Domingo. But the 24-year-old Lebak, Sultan Kudarat native defended well and landed an overhand right that rocked Tomioka.

There was a brief break in the contest after Tomioka’s mouthpiece was spat out from a punch, which gave Domingo a little bit more time to recover.

After referee Tanaka put Tomioka’s mouthpiece back on, Domingo unleashed a solid right hook to Tomioka’s head that dropped him to the floor. Tomioka stood up but wasn’t able regain his senses, which forced referee Tanaka to end the fight in the 2:21 mark of the fourth round.

“I didn’t let him stand right away. I told him to keep his guard up and just regroup for the next round because he was still groggy. But this kid really is brave because he was still throwing punches even though he was still groggy,” Domingo’s uncle and trainer Michael Domingo told SunStar Cebu. “(The mouthpiece) was a blessing. I really believe that he would knock him out because his (Tomioka) other two losses were by knockout.”

Domingo won his second straight fight in Japan after stopping Jukiya Iimura back in Oct. 20. Domingo improved to 18-2 with 10 knockouts.

The 20-year-old Tomioka suffered his first loss in 2022 after back-to-back wins to start off the year. Tomioka dropped to 6-3 with five knockouts.

Meanwhile, veteran Roy Sumugat (14-13-1, 7 KOs) was knocked out by Taiga Imanaga (3-0, 3 KOs) in the sixth round in the undercard.
