Editorial: Be thankful for 2022; be hopeful, compassionate for 2023

A lot has happened in 2022.

One, we have a new set of chief executives.

Succeeding former President Rodrigo R. Duterte and former Vice President Leni Robredo are current President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. and Vice President Sara Z. Duterte. Both won by a landslide in the 2022 National Elections.

In Davao City, Sebastian “Baste” Duterte will continue the reign of the Dutertes. Not only will he be filling in the big shoes his sister and father have left, but he will also be likely challenged to carve his own legacy for the city.

Another major change is the Covid-19 situation. The previous administration’s Covid-19 response is far from perfect. However, we have to thank them for ensuring that people get their vaccines. Now, we are reaping its benefits. Thanks to those who are vaccinated, transmission has remained low, not too many are getting into hospitals as compared to before, and we are able to move around more.

Definitely, there are more things that happened this year – both good and bad. However, despite what has happened in 2022, we should be thankful for every bit of blessing we receive for the year.

As we said earlier, being able to move around more freely now and being able to travel to more places is something that we can be thankful for. Think about it, as movement restrictions were lifted, more companies reopened, and more jobs were made available.

Speaking of jobs, if you have one, whether it pays well or not, it is still something to be thankful for. If you are working for a kind and caring employer, be thankful.

If you are able to eat three times a day, have a comfortable place to live in, and are able to spend for your wants and needs, be thankful.

Be thankful too if you are blessed with good friends and a loving family.

There are a lot of things to be thankful for. If you think your year was bad, sit down and reflect on the small blessing you had in the year. Sometimes we fail to appreciate the little things in life and all it takes is a bit of reflection. Then, you will see how much you have been blessed.

For 2023, let’s remain hopeful.

On a personal note, let’s be hopeful for a fruitful year. On a larger scale, let’s be hopeful that our country will become better.

At the same time, let’s learn to be more loving toward one another in 2023. Let’s show compassion to others and not allow anger or fear to control us.

As a new year dawns, we do not know how 2023 will be. But let’s hope and pray that things will turn out for the good in 2023.

Happy New Year, everyone!
