THE Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) recalled on January 1, 2023 the acts and teachings of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI even as they offered prayers for the late former Pontiff.

In a statement, CBCP President Bishop Pablo David said all Filipino bishops are one in praying for the soul of Benedict XVI, who passed away on Saturday, December 31, at the age of 95.

"Let us commend him to the Lord and pray for his eternal repose," said David.

"Eternal rest grant unto Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him," he added.

According to the CBCP chief, the Catholic faithful will remember him fondly as the "Pope of Charity."

"He began his episcopacy with a profoundly theological encyclical entitled Deus Caritas Est (God is Love)," said David.

The prelate said they also remember Benedict XVI's dedication to the Church's teachings.

"He will be especially remembered as a great theologian, catechist, and musician," said David.

He said clergymen, who became bishops during Benedict XVI's papacy, will forever be thankful to him.

"We will fondly remember him, especially those among us bishops, who had been appointed by him to the episcopal ministry. It was Pope Benedict XVI who appointed me bishop in July 2006," said David.

On December 31, Benedict XVI passed away quietly at 9:34 a.m. (Vatican time) just days after it was revealed that he was “very ill.”

Benedict XVI's death came almost 10 years since he retired as Pontiff in February 2013, citing his advanced age and his lack of strength to fulfill his mandate as reasons. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
