MMDA offers help in 2010 census

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Friday has offered its resources to help the National Statistic Office (NSO) in the conduct of the 2010 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) in the metropolis.

Corazon Bautista-Cruz, MMDA Assistant General Manager for Planning, said the agency will lend its television and radio stations which could help in the attainment of a successful CPH.

The official pointed out that the data to be obtained from the conduct of the census will be very useful in development planning and in the formulation of strategies and programs of government for the delivery of basic services to the public.

The MMDA is the concurrent chair of the Metro Manila Inter-Agency Committee (MMIAC) on informal settlers which is tasked to address the perennial problems on illegal squatting and to carry out housing and resettlement.

Meanwhile, MMDA Chairman Oscar Inocentes vowed to discuss the CPH with the newly-elected mayors and other LGU executives during the Council's meeting on May 26.

“I enjoin all the LGUs to campaign and ensure the successful implementation of the CPH within their respective areas of jurisdiction as it will be the basis of subsequent programs and policies which will be undertaken by the new administration,” Inocentes said.

The NSO is the lead agency in the conduct of the CPH.

Earlier, the Department of Education (DepEd) deployed some 75,000 teachers to conduct the census that last Monday and will end on June 12.

The activity will obtain a complete count of population, demographic characteristics (population density, ethnicity, education level, health, economic status), and geographic distribution. (AH/Sunnex)
