PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has ordered the release of P3 million for the repair of school facilities damaged by flooding in Misamis Oriental.

“If the LGUs (local government units) can take the load, we can send you the P3 million plus immediately. Kasi ito ‘yung nakalista ditto (this is has been listed), for the school buildings,” Marcos said during a situation briefing in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.

“I’m talking about the school buildings for the repair. Yeah, do it. By administration na lang para mas mabilis. Mas mabilis and mas mura (The faster, the cheaper),” he added.

Executive officials of Misamis Oriental said 63 classrooms were flooded following the continuous rains over the past few weeks.

Marcos said school buildings and other facilities should also be looked into when the floodwaters have subsided.

Meanwhile, Marcos distributed P5,000 cash assistance under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program to fishermen who were affected by the bad weather.

“Ako ay nandito upang tingnan kung ano ba talaga ang nangyari at kung ano ‘yung mga kailangang gawin. At tiyakin na ‘yung mga nawala sa tahanan, mga evacuees ay nasa inyo lahat ng inyong pangangailangan,” he said.

(I am here to see what really happened and what needs to be done, and make sure that those who lost their homes, evacuees have all your needs.)

“Kaya’t tinitiyak namin na lahat kayo na hindi pa makauwi sa inyong mga tahanan at nandito pa sa mga evacuation center ay nasusuportahan, naaalagaan, mayroon kayong kinakain, mayroon kayong tinutulugan,” he added.

(So we make sure that all of you who have not returned to your homes and are still here in the evacuation centers are supported, taken care of, you have something to eat, you have somewhere to sleep.)

The President also assured that the government will help them as they rebuild their houses damaged by the calamity.

He said they are also entitled to avail themselves of the government’s wide range of assistance, including the Sure Aide Program and the Rice Farmer Financial Assistance (Rafa), both under the Department of Agriculture; the Emergency Shelter Assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development; and the “Bangka Ko, Gawa Ko” program of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

Over 18,000 families in the town of Gingoog, mostly residing in the coastal areas, were affected by the shear line.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council earlier reported over 50 fatalities due to shear line as well as low pressure area which brought heavy rains in various parts of the country. (SunStar Philippines)
