Grenade explodes outside Jolo church

A FRAGMENTATION grenade exploded in front of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cathedral Church in the island province of Sulu, south of Zamboanga City, a military official said Friday.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert Velasco, commander of Marine Battalion Landing Team-6 MBLT-6), said the explosion took place around 9:30 p.m. Thursday in a public plaza in front of the church in downtown Jolo, the capital of Sulu province.

Velasco said investigation continues to unmask the suspect who tossed the fragmentation grenade into the public plaza.

He said no one was reported killed or injured in the grenade explosion, except that the blast has caused minor damage on the gate of the Mt. Carmel Cathedral Church.

Velasco said he has ordered his personnel to intensify security measures, including the conduct of patrols, to prevent further bombings.

In January 10, this year, the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cathedral Church was also hit by a grenade explosion that damaged its window panes. No one was killed or injured in that attack.
