THE University of Cebu student-athletes paid a courtesy call on school president Atty. Augusto Go last week, following a successful stint in two major tournaments in 2022.

The athletes made their mark in the PEKAF Arnis Visayas Qualifying Tournament held in Cebu and the Batang Pinoy Championship in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

The UC Arnis team won 10 gold medals, nine silvers and eight bronzes in the PEKAF Arnis Visayas Qualifying tilt, placing third overall next to Team Cebu City (22-9-15) and Minglanilla Arnis Team (12-10-15).

The student-athletes in badminton, swimming, track and field and chess together with UC athletic director Jessica Jawad Honoridez paid a separate courtesy call on Go.

UC also made its presence felt in the Batang Pinoy Championship, which made a return after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

UC held its ground against top athletes in the country with three golds, eight silvers and eight bronzes in athletics, chess, weightlifting and badminton.

Chess wizard Maria Kristine Lavandero shone the brightest after bagging two gold medals and two silvers in the chess girls’ U15 category.

Ellaikha Marie Canillo won first place in the badminton girls’ singles event.

Honoridez said the student-athletes were grateful for the support given to them by Go that paved the way to the successful stint in two tourneys.

She added that the student-athletes earned extra motivation to compete and become better in the upcoming events for the 2023 season. (RSC)
