A MAGNITUDE 7.3 earthquake struck Sarangani in Davao Occidental on Wednesday afternoon, January 18, 2023, but no tsunami warnings were issued.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake jolted Sarangani at 2:06 p.m.
The tectonic quake has a depth of 64 kilometers.
Phivolcs reported that Intensity II was felt in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Glan and Kiamba, Sarangani; General Santos City; and Tupi, Santo Niño, Koronadal City, and T'Boli in South Cotabato.
Intensity I was reported in Kidapawan City, Cotabato; Maitum and Maasim, Sarangani; Tantangan, Lake Sebu, Tampakan, Suralla, and Norala, South Cotabato; and Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur.
According to the US Tsunami Warning System of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there is no tsunami following the 7.3 magnitude earthquake. Phivolcs also confirmed this in a separate advisory.
Damage of the quake in Davao Occidental and some parts of Davao Region is yet to be determined.
