The most vibrant festival in the country makes a grand comeback. After the pandemic and Typhoon Odette, Sinulog makes its spectacular return this year.
"One Cebu Island Sinulog 2023," the "Queen of Philippine Festivals," is being celebrated in Cebu, the "Queen City of the South," with a flurry of activities. An example of "real and unique" Cebuano culture, Sinulog is an expression of Cebuanos and Filipinos' devotion to the Santo Niño.
Among the much-anticipated events are nightly shows at Plaza Independencia, Sinulog Idol, a fluvial procession, coronations for Miss Cebu 2023 and Sinulog Festival Queen, a re-enactment of Queen Juana and Rajah Humabon's Baptism at the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño, and the Sinulog 2023 Fireworks Display and Competition.
The highlight, of course, is the Sinulog 2023 Grand Parade at the South Road Properties. On exciting display is the Sinulog dance moves, which are two steps forward and one step backward, as the dancers of various contingents sway to a distinct rhythm of drums. These graceful movements resemble the flow or current (sulog) of what was known as Cebu's Pahina River.
What was once a regional observance of piety and gratitude has turned into a national ceremony, then blossomed into an international affair with lots of socializing and merrymaking. As with any festivals in the Philippines, there will be lots of music and dancing all over.
