THE suspect in the killing of a seaman at a disco party in Sitio Villa San Pedro, Barangay Tulay, Minglanilla town surrendered to the office of Cebu City Councilor Phillip Zafra past 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2023.

Benjie Sanchez Dolino, of legal age, was then turned over to the Minglanilla Police Station.

Minglanilla Police Chief Major Arieza Otida considered the incident a “closed” case following the arrest of Dolino, who shot dead 25-year-old seafarer Newlbert Ontua Candavid, of San Francisco town, Agusan del Sur, on January 22.

Candavid reportedly worked for sea vessel Poseidon 45, which was anchored in Barangay Tulay at the time of the incident.

Dolino narrated during police investigation that he was drinking with friends with the presence of his 12-year-old daughter at a disco event when the victim’s group arrived and hit their bottles of liquor.

He said he called the attention of the victim, resulting in a heated argument.

He added that Candavid even elbowed his daughter.

The suspect said that when they left the area, they were met by their opponents outside and there they punched him twice.

He retaliated by shooting the victim several times.

“Nawagtang na gyud ko ato sir tungod sa akong kalagot. Nagbasol ko kay nalayo ko sa akong pamilya pero wa na siyay mahimo kay nahitabo na man,” Dolino said.

(I was out of my mind sir because of anger. I regret what I did because I’m away from my family but there is nothing I could do since it already happened). (BBT/TPT)
