THREE unidentified bodies of suspected rebels were found following a series of encounters with state troopers over the weekend in Sitio Bugne, Barangay Oringao, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

As this developed, Kabankalan Mayor Benjie Miranda announced Sunday night, February 5, that 283 families or 822 individuals have fled their homes following the encounters and taken shelter at the city's evacuation centers.

Press statement from the 94th Infantry Battalion said they clashed with the alleged members of the New People's Army around 5 p.m. Saturday, February 4, and at 6 a.m. Sunday, February 5.

The Army said the residents reported the presence of the suspected rebels in the community, prompting them to conduct a security operation in the area.

While at the vicinity of Sitio Bugne in Barangay Oringao, the soldiers encountered 15 armed personalities who scampered in different directions after they were overpowered by the government troopers and allegedly left behind their three comrades.

The troops also recovered an M14 rifle, a caliber .38 pistol, a caliber .45 pistol, backpacks, and subversive documents at the scene.

Meanwhile, Colonel Orlando Edralin, 303rd Brigade commander, said the information regarding the presence of NPA in the area came from the locals.

"I am commending the vigilance of the local populace in helping and giving our troops accurate and significant information indicating their concern for the peace and order of their community. Their cooperation with our troops manifests their genuine desire for an NPA-free Kabankalan City. With the locals' overwhelming support, we are confident that a peaceful and progressive Kabankalan can be achieved," Edralin said.

The 303rd Brigade commander also called on the remaining NPAs to surrender to the government.
