THE University of Cebu (UC) nursing students who saved the life of a wounded mango vendor in downtown Cebu City were recognized by the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).

Angyl Fayth Ababat and Kristianne Joice Ona had each received a plaque of recognition during CCPO’s flag-raising ceremony on Monday morning, February 6, for saving Bernadeta Zamora, 54, from bleeding to death right after her neck was slashed by her 58-year-old live-in partner Edwin Salazar Lumacad on Plaridel St. in downtown Cebu City on January 30, 2023.

They also received cash envelopes from CCPO Chief Colonel Ireneo Dalogdog, as well as recognition as modern-day heroes.

Dalogdog, however, did not reveal the amount but said it was enough to cover their transportation costs to the UC Banilad campus.

“Ang among role sa community is to serve and protect, that is why gitagaan nato’g recognition katong duha ka young women tungod sa ilahang good deeds nga gipakita nga maoy naka salbar sa kinabuhi sa atong kababayan, ilang gipakita ang ilang kaisog ang ilang pagka-matinabangon ug ang ilang pagka maloloy-on (we gave recognition to the two young women because of their good deeds that saved the life of our compatriot. They displayed bravery, kindness, and compassion),” Dalogdog said.

The two second year nursing students of UC Banilad campus were overjoyed by their enormous blessings.

Ababat and Ona said they just offered assistance and did not expect for a reward.

“It is our utmost gratitude and our utmost thank you and it is a worthwhile blessing and it is also murag maka-gaan sa feelings nga nakatabang mi,” Ababat said.

“A big thank you sa pag-recognize sa among life, a little help lang unta sa amoa pero grabe ilang pag-recognize,” said Ona.

In addition to the CCPO award, the Mandaue Eagles Club also presented them with a plaque of appreciation.

The two heaped praises on social media not only from Cebu but all over the world.

Ababat revealed that they will visit Zamora in the next few days in the hospital to check how she is doing.

“I’m hoping nga si Nanay (Bernadeta Zamora) she’ll live a long life pa gyud after this. She’ll receive peace na sad gani sir kay finally kay that man is now behind bars,” she added.

Bernadeta is still being treated at the hospital due to a deep wound in her neck, although the CCPO described her as being in a safe condition. (AYB/TPT)
