FORMER Court of Appeals (CA) Justice Melchor Sadang will complete the five-man committee that will scrutinize the records of third-level police officials amid efforts to cleanse the police organization of erring members, especially those involved in the illegal drug trade, Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr. said on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.

“Ang pang limang miyembro ng advisory group ang pangalan niya ay si Justice Melchor Quirino Cabarroguis Sadang,” said Abalos.

(The fifth member of the advisory group is Justice Melchor Quirino Cabarroguis Sadang.)

“Si Justice Sadang ay siya ay naging associate justice ng Court of Appeals nung 2011 up to 2017. Siya rin ay naging presiding judge ng RTC (Regional Trial Court) Cavite City nung taong 2000 up to 2011 at siya ay talagang dumaan sa pag-iiscreen at kami ay nagpasasalamat kay Justice Melchor Quirino Cabarroguis Sadang sa pagtanggap niya bilang fifth member nitong advisory group,” he told reporters.

(Justice Sadang became an associate justice of the Court of Appeals in 2011 up to 2017. He also became the presiding judge of the RTC (Regional Trial Court) Cavite City in the year 2000 up to 2011 and he really went through the screening and we are grateful to Justice Melchor Quirino Cabarroguis Sadang for accepting him as the fifth member of this advisory group.)

The other members of the committee as announced by Abalos earlier were retired police general now Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Rodolfo Azurin Jr., former Defense secretary Gilberto Teodoro, and retired police general Isagani Nerez.

Abalos said the committee will convene on Monday, February 13, to set the guidelines for the conduct of verification and investigation on the intelligence reports against the police colonels and generals who submitted their courtesy resignation in January.

The interior secretary welcomed 2023 by appealing for the full-fledged police colonels and generals to submit their courtesy resignation after having found that some of them were actually involved in the illegal drugs trade while they are supposed to help the government address the drug menace.

Abalos said the committee investigation will run for about two to three months and will submit the names of those whose resignations are accepted to the National Police Commission for another round of verification before submitting their recommendation to the President.

Abalos assured anew the credibility, integrity and a good track record of the members of the committee as he expressed confidence that they will never give in to any political or outside pressure.

He reiterated that monitoring, investigation and case build-up against other police personnel will continue amid the intensified internal cleansing in the police organization. (SunStar Philippines)
