BACOLOD City has logged a total of 39 dengue cases from January 1-28, posting an increase of 62.5 percent compared to the same period in 2022.

Dr. Grace Tan, head of the City Health Office-Environment Sanitation Division, said from January 1-28, they listed 39 dengue cases with one death, compared to 24 cases, with also one death, in 2022.

This year's fatality was a nine-year-old female who is immunocompromised with congenital anomalies.

Of the 39 cases, Barangays Vista Alegre and Pahanocoy topped the list with four cases each followed by Barangays Granada, Estefania, Mandalagan, and Mansilingan with three cases each; Barangays 40, Alijis, Tangub, Taculing, Villamonte, Singcang-Airport with two cases each.

Tan said the barangays with a clustering of dengue cases from January 1 to 28 include Barangays Pahanocoy, Vista Alegre, Estefania, and Mansilingan.

Tan noted that dengue is transmitted through a bite of dengue-infected Aedes mosquitoes.

"These mosquitoes can lay dozens of eggs in a space or container that holds clear and stagnant water, dish drainer, plants, gutter, old rubber tire, water storage, among others," Tan said.

She said peak biting hours is two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset.

"These mosquitoes can breed in and outside of houses/dwellings, schools, and other places," she added.

Tan said the public should practice the 4S program of the Department of Health which stands for Search and destroy mosquito breeding places; use Self-protection measures; Seek early consultation for fever lasting more than two days; and Say no to indiscriminate fogging.
