PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. flew to Japan on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, for a four-day official visit.
In his departure speech, Marcos said his visit will strengthen the collaboration between the Philippines and Japan, especially in areas of agriculture, renewable energy, digital transformation, defense and infrastructure.
“My bilateral visit to Japan is essential and is part of a larger foreign policy agenda to forge closer political ties, stronger defense, and security cooperation, as well as lasting economic partnerships with major countries in the region amid a challenging global environment,” he said.
Marcos is set to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and an audience with Emperor Naruhito.
He said he will discuss with Kishida the Philippine-Japan bilateral relations and regional cooperation, including its commitment to mutual peace and prosperity.
They are also expected to ink key agreements in the areas of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, infrastructure, agriculture and digital cooperation.
Marcos said his team will also work on further strengthening the bonds of friendship with Japan, which is one of the country’s most reliable partners both in times of crisis and prosperity.
He said he and his economic team and key private sector representatives will also meet with Japan’s business leaders to promote trade and investment opportunities in the Philippines.
Marcos will cap off his Japan visit by meeting some members of the Filipino community in Japan. (SunStar Philippines)
