THE Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines Incorporated (MFPI) held the Visayas Mountain Festival 2023 at Silay Outdoor Recreation Eco-Tourism Area (Old Hospital), Barangay Patag, Silay City from February 3 to 5, 2023.
Jason Sia, one of the mountaineers, said the undertaking was an annual event of the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines Incorporated, hosted by Butlak Banaag Mountaineering Society, Inc. (BBMSI) in cooperation with Silay City, Silay City Tourism, Silay City Environment and Natural Resources Office.
Mayor Joedith Gallego graced the said festival with activities such as the Basic Mountaineering Course, Advance Mountaineering Techniques (River crossing/tracing and Single Rope Techniques), and a hike.
The hiking team traveled from Barangay Campuestohan to Danao (Tinagong Dagat) to Barangay Patag from February 3 to 4.
Engineer Joan Nathaniel Gerangaya, acting head of the Provincial Environment and Management Office, shared with the participants the applicable laws governing Northern Negros, Natural Park.
Alfredo Prinsipe, also a resource speaker, talked about mountain biodiversity and the impact of mountaineering on the mountain environment.
Various mountaineering instructors from all over the Visayas collaborated in teaching the participants the basic mountaineering course, river crossings, single rope techniques, safe mountaineering practices, and first aid.
This undertaking will leave a legacy to the participants about the value of community, brotherhood, and mutual support in a mountaineering activity, Sia said.
