NINETY-SIX families living in Sitio Laray, Barangay San Roque in Talisay City who lost their homes during a fire on Monday, Feb. 6, 2023, finally got the cash aid promised to them by city officials and even from national officials.

Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas Jr., his wife, Cebu First District Rep. Rhea Mae Gullas, and members of the City Council led the distribution of the financial aid at the Barangay San Roque gym on Friday, Feb. 10.

Families whose homes were damaged during the fire received P5,000, while those who lost their homes received P10,000. The cash aid provided by the office of Congresswoman Gullas was in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Aside from Gullas and his wife, The offices of Mandaue City Lone District Rep. Emmarie “Lolypop” Ouano and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go also gave cash aid to the fire victims.

Sen. Imee Marcos will also visit the fire victims on Feb. 19 to distribute cash aid to them.

Though he understands that the cash aid they’ve given to the fire victims is not enough, Mayor Gullas said that could change after the City Council has already approved an ordinance that will increase the cash assistance for fire victims whose homes were destroyed in fires from P10,000 to P15,000. But Gullas said they are still awaiting the decision of the Cebu Provincial Board on whether to ratify the ordinance.

Meanwhile, Mayor Gullas continues to call on private citizens to help the fire victims in Barangay San Roque to donate items such as ready-to-eat food, blankets, clothing, household goods, and necessities for infants and the elderly.

Gullas said for those interested to donate, they can drop off their donations at the San Roque Barangay Hall or at the Negosyo Center at the City Hall. (Jenika Gi-An C. Nero, STC Intern)
