Martin assures viewers Batang Quiapo far different from 'Probinsyano'



After the successful run of FPJ’s “Ang Probinsyano,” primetime king Coco Martin is yet again returning to the Philippine television bolder and stronger, as not just only an actor but a full-time director of his latest drama, “Batang Quiapo,” which is also co-directed by Malu Sevilla.

Starring together with Martin in the series are veteran artists in the acting industry like Cherry Pie Picache, John Estrada, Charo Santos, McCoy de Leon, Lovi Poe, Benzon Dalina, Mark and Sen. Lito Lapid, Jojit Lorenzo, Ping Medina, Mercedes Cabral, Alan Paule, Lou Veloso, Susan Africa, Pen Medina, Irma Adlawan and Christopher de Leon. The show also features social media influencers also debuting in the acting world: Toni Fowler, Norvan and Lovely Dela Peña, and many more.

The newest action-comedy television series had its successful pilot airing on Monday, Feb. 13, 2023, and was among the top trending topics on social media. According to the data collected by its producer Dreamscape Entertainment, the series peaked at 341,509 concurrent viewers or those watching at the same time on Kapamilya Online Live, ABS-CBN’s free live streaming on YouTube.

In the Cebu media conference session that happened on Feb. 12, Martin expressed how difficult it is to match the seven-year energy of “Ang Probinsyano.” Yet, according to him, one thing is for sure, they will do their very best so that people will still enjoy and stay tuned to every episode in the series.

Extreme set preparations, upgraded equipment and quality acting skills are things that they are highly ensuring to achieve to have the best output they could produce.

According to Picache, Martin uses a script improvisation method that, even though very unusual for them, is said to be helpful as it leads to raw, honest and believable emotions that Filipino audiences anticipate.

“We’re just aiming for top-notch quality in terms of technicality that we know will make Filipinos proud,” Martin said.

While “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” follows the story of a policeman who fights for good, “Batang Quiapo” tackles the story of the whole Filipino community. Actors and actresses part of “Batang Quiapo” shared how honored and grateful they were to be chosen to give life to their given characters.

Estrada stated that of his past television projects, five of these which he considered memorable had Martin as lead star. He further describes his co-star and director as a “creative genius.”

Picache praised Martin as a “competent, amazing and world-class director,” likening him to wine that gets smoother as time passes by. Senator Lapid, who also acts and functions as fight scene instructor, admitted feeling surprised of himself who was able to shed tears in scenes with Martin’s direction.

Regarding Martin’s leading lady, Lovi Poe, Martin describes her as down-to-earth, humble, simple, has no “star complex,” thoughtful and a “cowboy.”

Martin believes in the talent of every artists to change and mold people’s lives by their talents and skills. He reminisces his indie film experiences where they have limited budget but still courageously have the will to compete with other films even internationally. Winning awards result in Filipino artists being recognized internationally. This is how Martin envisions the industry, and one of his main goals in achieving success for the series.
