24 temporary housing units for Looc fire victims set for turnover

TWENTY-FOUR temporary housing units are now up for distribution to the fire victims of Barangay Looc in Mandaue City.

Marivic Cabigas, head of the Department of General Services, said they set the turnover of the housing units in Barangay Guizo across the Cebu International Convention Center compound on March 18.

Cabigas, an engineer, said each unit has an area of 20 square meters. The 24 houses comprise one of four blocks.

A total of 100 temporary housing units will be constructed on four blocks, Cabiga said.

The shelters were donated by the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry in cooperation with the Mandaue City Government and other stakeholders.

The fire that happened last November left at least 600 families homeless. They were first housed in the Looc Gym, then they were transferred to the Cesar M. Cabahug Elementary School, then they were moved to the Norkis Park across the Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School.

Johnbee Biton, head of the City’s House Urban and Development Office, earlier said that some victims went back to their respective provinces, while others rented houses in other areas, leaving around 140 families at the Norkis Park housed in large modular tents.
