The Academy Awards are anything but dull. Other than a night of celebrating some of the best works of cinema, over the years, the Academy Awards has had its fair share of memorable moments that had its viewers in a frenzy. Whether it is a long overdue win, a celebrity causing a ruckus, or a controversial joke that one of the presenters made, it is without a doubt that the Oscars are quite unpredictable but still very much exciting to watch.

Here are some of the top eight Oscar moments that got the world on a spin:

Halle Berry winning Best Actress

In 2002, a historic win was made by Halle Berry for her performance in “Monster’s Ball” by being the first black woman to ever win the coveted award. Her emotional speech brought everyone to tears as this showed that Tinseltown was ready for a new shift—opening more doors to black female actors.

Anna Paquin winning Best Supporting Actress

At only 11 years old, Anna Paquin shocked audiences around the world when she won best supporting actress for her performance in “The Piano” at the 66th Academy Awards. She bested well-established actresses such as Emma Thompson for her role in “In the Name of the Father” and Winona Ryder in “The Age of Innocence.”

Christopher Reeves returns

After a terrible horse accident that left the beloved “Superman” actor paralyzed from the neck down, Christopher Reeves surprised everyone at the 1996 Academy Awards when he showed up on a wheelchair to give a speech about social responsibility. The crowd gave the actor a long standing ovation and a few shed a tear or two.

Steven Spielberg finally wins Best Picture and Best Director

Steven Spielberg’s prime in the ‘90s culminated in two Oscar wins as his movie “Schindler’s List” won Best Picture as well as winning Best Director at the 1994 Academy Awards. His emotional speech about keeping the memories of the Holocaust survivors alive was enough to bring everyone to tears.

Sacheen Littlefeather moment

Marlon Brando is a well-known actor who never fails to make his advocacies in politics known even in the most glamorous award show in the world. Winning best actor for his performance in “The Godfather,” Brando didn’t show up but instead had a Native American activist named, Sacheen Littlefeather announce that he didn’t want to accept the award due to the film industry’s poor treatment towards the Native Americans.

The Oscar slap

The 94th Academy Awards can only be summarized in three words: the Oscar slap. American Comedian Chris Rock poked fun at Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pickett Smith, which resulted in the former walking up on stage and slapping Rock in the middle of his gig.

‘Parasite’ wins Best Picture

Rarely do international films make it to the list of nominees for best picture or win this prestigious category. Well, “Parasite” made history as the first non-English film to win best picture. The movie bested “1917,” “Little Women,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “The Irishman,” “Marriage Story,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Ford vs Ferrari.” This win shows that the Academy Awards is in line with what Bong Joon-ho said in his earlier speeches: “Once you overcome that one-inch barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many amazing films.”

The Oscar selfie

During the 2014 Academy Awards, comedian and host Ellen DeGeneres made celebrities jump to their feet (including Meryl Streep) for a selfie that later became viral on Twitter and became one of the most retweeted photos. The selfie was absolute chaos as some of Hollywood’s biggest names tried to squeeze themselves within the camera frame.
