CITY OF SAN FERNANDO The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region III (BFAR-3) is planning to develop the existing salt production industry in Central Luzon.

BFAR-3 Director Wilfredo Cruz said they are in the process of profiling and assessing the existing salt producers in the region.

Cruz led the site visits to two solar salt farms — one 80-hectare farm in San Nicolas, Bulakan town and another 18 hectares in Wawang Namayan in Malolos, both in Bulacan province.

These salt farms were identified with the help and the support of the provincial and municipal agriculture offices.

The site assessment and validation were conducted to target existing salt farmers and producers as well as fishermen groups seeking to adopt the latest technologies to improve production and revive their operation.

The BFAR was tasked to lead various research and development initiatives on salt production and assist marginal and artisanal salt makers.

“We are working double time to beef up support for the salt industry to enhance production of local salt in Central Luzon,” Cruz said.

Aside from those in Bulacan, Cruz had also visited the salt farms in the province of Zambales.

The validation and profiling program is in line with the government’s efforts to modernize the country’s salt industry
