Suarez faces fellow ex-Olympian Fleming in Australia on March 15

CHARLY Suarez is up against his stiffest competition to date as he takes on fellow former Olympian Paul Fleming for four regional title belts Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at the Kevin Betts Stadium in Mount Druitt, Sydney, Australia.

The 34-year-old Suarez weighed in at 129 pounds, while Fleming tipped the scales at 128.7 pounds.

At stake in the fight are Fleming’s World Boxing Association (WBA) Oceania, World Boxing Council (WBC) Asian Boxing Council and International Boxing Organization (IBO) Inter-Continental super featherweight belts.

The vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Inter-Continental super feather strap is also on the line and the fight will also be an IBO super featherweight title eliminator.

The winner of the fight becomes the mandatory challenger of IBO super featherweight king Anthony Cacace.

Suarez is ranked No. 8 by the IBF and a win over Fleming should boost him up the ladder if he wants to pursue the title which is currently around the waist of unbeaten Tajik Shavkat Rakhimov. Suarez is also ranked No. 30 by the WBC

Fleming is rated No. 11 by the WBA, No. 13 by the IBF and No. 28 by the WBC.

Since turning pro in 2019, Suarez has made a lot of noise in the local scene, beating the likes of promising prospects Delmar Pellio and Tomjune Mangubat and experienced Marjohn Yap.

Suarez, who competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics, is coming off a second-round stoppage of Defry Palulu on Dec. 10.

Fleming should be Suarez’s toughest opponent in the pro ranks.

Suarez, however, has faced some elite names in his amateur days. He fought the likes of The Ring pound-for-pound No. 7 Vasyl Lomachenko, former IBF super featherweight champion Joe Cordina and ex-world title challenger Robson Conceicao.

Like Suarez, the 34-year-old Fleming also fought in the Olympics. He represented Australia in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Fleming hasn’t fought for close to a year. He last saw action on March 23, 2022, in which he beat Jackson Jon England by unanimous decision.

Fleming owns a win over former world champion Panya Uthok, who he beat by unanimous decision in 2018.

Suarez is 14-0 with eight knockouts, while Fleming is 28-0-1 with 18 knockouts. (EKA)
