MPTC 'keen' to help build Metro Cebu Expressway

THE Manny Pangilinan-led Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC) has expressed its interest to get involved in the construction of the Metro Cebu Expressway project.

The project traverses the slopes in the mountains of the City of Naga in the south to Danao City in the north. It has a distance of 72 kilometers.

Allan Go Alfon, general manager of MPTC’s sister company Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway Corp., said Wednesday, March 15, 2023 that they were just waiting for the requirements, including the financial needs, under the terms of reference that will be issued by the national government regarding the continuation of the project’s implementation.

The Metro Cebu Expressway was started by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) five years ago to give motorists an alternative route amid Metro Cebu’s traffic jams.

Only five of the 17.15 kilometers that make up Segment 3 of the project from Naga City to Talisay City, have been finished so far.

Then DPWH 7 director Edgar Tabacon said in May 2022 that a total of P1.3 billion, or P260 million annually, had been released for the project from 2017 to 2022.

He said that if the trend continues, it would take them 17 years to complete Segment 3, which costs P4.5 billion.

He suggested that the project be placed under overseas development assistance or public-private partnership.

Segments 1 and 2 of the project, which cover 57 kilometers from Talisay City to Danao City, have not started yet due to lack of funding.

Last week, the National Economic and Development Authority approved the Metro Cebu Expressway as one of the priority projects under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (PAC / TPT)
