Missing crew member found dead in Lapu waters

THE missing crew member of a tugboat in Cebu was found dead on Saturday, March 11, 2023, according to Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District Central Visayas.

It was around 1 p.m. when the body of Joseph Niño Villamor, the 22-year old crew member of mtug Nagasaka, was found floating in the sea by local fisherfolk of Barangay Ibo, Lapu-Lapu City.

According to the PCG, Villamor’s body was identified by his family.

An allision was reported between the tugboat mtug Nagasaka and LCT Jana Juliana last Friday, March 10 at approximately 200 yards south of Colorado shipyard in Consolacion in northern Cebu.

“Mtug Nagasaka was towing LCT Jana Juliana when the LCT’s port bow allided with the MTUG, causing mtug Nagasaka to sink,” the PCG said in its report.

Following the incident, the PCG dispatched a dive team from Special Operations Group-Central Visayas to search for Villamor, the first crew member to jump into the waters.

Mtug Nagasaka was carrying about 60 liters of diesel oil when the accident occurred.

The Maritime Environmental Protection Unit-Central Visayas of the Philippine Coast Guard has been sent to Cebu to examine the local seas for potential oil spills.
