GUMACA Bishop Victor Ocampo died late Thursday, March 16, 2023, in a hospital in Quezon after having a heart attack.

In an announcement posted by the Diocese of Gumaca, Ocampo died at the age of 71.

"The clergy and the lay faithful are requested to pray for the repose of his soul," said the Gumaca diocese.

In a report by CBCP News, Gumaca Chancellor Fr. Toni Ryan del Moro said Ocampo had suffered a heart attack.

"The bishop died at 5:58 p.m. at a hospital in Gumaca, where he was rushed to," said del Moro as quoted by the official news agency of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

Born in Angeles City in 1952, Ocampo was ordained priest of the Diocese of Balanga in 1977.

Following his ordination, he worked in eight parishes and served as director of various diocesan offices, such as catechetical office, the liturgical commission, the Biblical apostolate, and the family and life commission.

He also served as the chancellor of the diocese and member of the consultors.

Ocampo was also the diocesan administrator of Balanga from November 2009 until July 2010, when the diocese was without a bishop.

On June 12, 2015, Pope Francis appointed him as the third bishop of Gumaca.

Ocampo was ordained as bishop on August 29, 2015, and was installed on September 3, 2015.

Details of his wake and burial have yet to be announced. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
