Sangil: Nganga

Dissect why most senators, particularly Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri is against charter change. Here’s my take. He wanted his kind to remain forever as long as they live. Most politicians of today never had it so good. Aside from the perks they enjoy they can run for higher positions and when they lost they can reclaim their seats in the upper house. When their term in the senate ends, they descend to the lower house, spend some time there and get back to the upper house on opportune time. Then they give their seats either to the spouse, son or a daughter. A merry go round while ordinary Juan de La Cruz can do nothing but NGANGA.

There’s a good and bad side on charter change of course. But the plus side far outweigh the negatives. Either the mode is con-con or con-ass , as far as I am concerned I don’t care. It shouldn’t be limited to the economic provisions. It should overhaul our political system. If it will not be done , the wealthy and ruling families will continue winning the elections and we can no longer nip the dynasties. No chance for your sons and daughters despite their excellent academic background if ranged vs siblings of dynasties.

Any poor candidate is not even given a chinaman’s chance to win as a mayor, governor and congressman without logistical support. In a small town, to run a decent campaign and you will be viewed as a contender you have to have at least P50 million in the kitty, and add more if you're facing an incumbent. In a premier province, P100 million is peanut when facing a reelectionist. In big cities you must be willing to part with your P50 million, if you have it. And if you don't have it, you can run as a member of the sanggunian. There you can get the exposure and chance to serve government. Hanggang doon ka lang.

The House of Representatives and the Senate mostly are composed of rich people . It is of public knowledge that large part of their wealth is sourced from their involvement in politics. ( Hindi ko sila nilalahat). A newcomer with small means cannot hope to grab key positions. There’s an expressed fear that in the coming election years, only those who are now in power will remain so. Their hold on electorates who are recipients of many favors will be bequeathed to members of their families. Level playing field only exist in our imagination.

The anti-dynasty bill in congress only went beyond the committee level and the scheduled plenary discussions on the measure were postponed many times over. I don't think this bill will ever be passed. Not as long as the present leaders are enjoying the perks and privileges of their offices, and serve as a key to more riches.so therefore, let’s overhaul our political system. NOW NA!
