THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) station in northern Negros Occidental is now preparing for the expected volume of passengers who will be traveling by sea during the observance of Holy Week, PCG-Northern Negros Occidental station chief Commander Joe Luviz Mercurio said Tuesday, March 21.

Mercurio said the heightened alert status would be raised by Friday, March 24.

He said PCG personnel will be posted in various ports—BREDCO and Banago ports in Bacolod City, as well as the ports in the cities of Sagay, Escalante, San Carlos, and the towns of Pulupandan and E.B. Magalona—to oversee the security of the travelers.

They are still waiting for the exact number of personnel who will be deployed during the period, he said.

As of now, Mercurio said he has already instructed his personnel to travel to the northern area of their operations to check their assets, such as their boats, to make sure that they are operational once the alert status has been raised.

Aside from the ports, the PCG has also begun checking various resorts, particularly those located in Bacolod City.

Mercurio said that they are checking every resort, which should have an available lifeguard with the appropriate training certificates, and pointed out that they are also expecting an influx of beachgoers during the period.

This week, Mercurio revealed that they are already seeing a steady increase in the influx of passengers compared to the same period last year.

He further added that the PCG is the leading agency that trains and oversees the capabilities of all lifeguards.*
