Bacolod eyes to construct medical waste facility in Barangay Felisa

THE city government of Bacolod is now planning to construct a medical waste facility near the sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa.

Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said Tuesday, March 21, that there was a proposal to put up a medical waste facility at the city’s centralize recycling facility in Barangay Felisa.

This, after the mayor determined that the City Health Office (CHO) was dumping its medical waste at the Barangay Handumanan public cemetery as well as the Burgos public cemetery.

Benitez said he already directed the CHO to stop dumping medical waste in public cemeteries.

He said the city should create a permanent solution for the medical waste and it should not be disposed of in the public cemeteries.

Aside from the CHO, the mayor said the city’s proposed medical waste facility will also accommodate hospital waste.

Benitez said currently, the hospitals in Bacolod City dispose of their medical waste in Iloilo City or Cebu City.

"We should dispose of it properly, and we should have a facility for that (medical waste)," he said.

The mayor disclosed that it will be part of the city’s proposed loan to purchase the lot for the said project.*
