POLICE designated at a checkpoint flagged down a car driven by a priest at the border of Makilala, Cotabato Province and Bansalan, Davao del Sur on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 after seeing its load of a plastic-covered item that looked like a human corpse but was later discovered a life-size Sto. Entierro image.

Fr. Jonel Peroy of the Diocese of Kidapawan, who came from Digos City, Davao del Sur, revealed that he bought Sto. Entierro to be used during the Holy Week event at the church in Kidapawan.

When the priest arrived at the checkpoint area, the police stopped him when they saw what appeared to be a dead body being loaded into the car.

Peroy was asked to step out of the car. He then identified himself as a priest, and that his load was a religious image.

But the police were still suspicious of the priest, resulting in the latter uncovering the image.

Checkpoint officials apologized for the inconvenience afterward.

"Gipababa ko sa sakyanan aron ipatan-aw ang akoang dala. Nagduda kaayo si Manong Pulis kay lahi ang porma mura'g lawas sa tawo nga giputos. Pagtan-aw nako mora'g lawas jud sa tawo nga giputos sa plastic... alangan Sto. Entierro gani no hahaha...gipaningot intawon ang pari explain nga patay'ng kristo akong dala unya gibuksan na lang jud naku aron pamatuod jud ug nagtug-an ko nga pari ko aron wala na daghan pangutana (They asked me to go down the car after the suspected it because it looked like a corpse that has been wrapped. That was Sto. Entierro. This priest was really sweating when he was explaining it to the cop that this was a religious statue, I had to unwrap for them to see and told them I was priest)," the priest said.

The priest has returned to the parish with the newly-bought image. (EEF)
