Water summit to begin today

A TWO-DAY water summit will kick off in Mandaue City on Monday, March 27, 2023, with aims to address water ecosystem concerns plaguing the province, from water resource management to sewage and septage issues.

The First Cebu Water Summit will take place at the bai Hotel Cebu.

In a press statement, the summit’s host Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) Cebu chapter said the event will provide an opportunity to collaborate and find solutions to the water ecosystem problems in Cebu.

It said the summit’s theme is “Turning the Tide on Cebu’s Future through Collaboration and Sustainability.”

The event will bring together leaders from metropolitan cities and province of Cebu, relevant government institutions, private and civil sectors and industry players. The University of San Carlos Water Resources Center, PUM Netherlands, the Cebu City Septage Management Board and Nature’s Spring have partnered with PIChE for the summit.

As part of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals 6 (clean water and sanitation), PIChE said it recognizes the significance of providing access to clean water and proper sanitation.

The discussions will focus on the national water resource management framework, which will serve as the basis of consensus among the sectors.

PIChE said key players and participants from the government, academe, business and water entities will obtain insights from water and wastewater authorities, researchers and industry players on policy-making and technological advancements in the field.

The summit, it said, aims to establish lasting commitments with other water sector stakeholders to address Cebu’s problem of water security and wastewater management.
