REROUTING of traffic was implemented on M.C. Briones St. in Sudlon, Barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City Thursday, March 30, 2023, due to a damaged skywalk.

The damaged skywalk also prompted Mayor Jonas Cortes to write to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7 to immediately act on the matter, saying it is posing an imminent danger to the public.

In a letter addressed to DPWH 7 Director Daisy Toledo, Cortes said hanging concrete beams can be seen on the skywalk and this might cause falling debris.

“In the absence of safety measures and warning signs in place, especially in the nearby pedestrian lane, it imposes continuous hazard to the general public,” said Cortes.

“Due to its exigency and for the safety of the Mandauehanons, you are hereby enjoined to fast-track the repair works and to place down the necessary safety measures to warn incoming motorists and pedestrians,” he added.

He asked the DPWH 7 to coordinate with the City Government for proper traffic management and to resolve the matter.

The City Engineering Office conducted an ocular inspection around 11:30 a.m. Thursday and recommended the traffic rerouting to ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians crossing below the skywalk.

Marivic Cabigas, OIC city engineer, also recommended the removal and replacement of the structure, saying it is no longer safe to be used due to the damage it has incurred.
