AS part of its efforts to put up more accessible Wi-Fi connections for state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the Davao Region, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) launched Broadband ng Masa at the University of Southeastern Philippines (Usep) IT Gym, Wednesday, March 29.

“Access to information has become an essential component of modern education, and it is imperative to provide students and teachers access to online resources to enable them to benefit from the wealth of information and education available online,” DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy said in a speech on March 29.

RA 10929 also known as The Free Internet Access Program, which created Broadband ng Masa aims to provide free access to internet service in all public places throughout the country, promote knowledge-building among citizens, and help students in accessing the Internet and utilize its usage easier.

“The Broadband ng Masa Program will also contribute to improving the quality of education by providing more online access to libraries, collaborative efforts in communicating with peers and experts from all over the world, and the utilization of digital tools in enhancing our learning experience,” Uy said.

This free Wi-Fi experience in SUCs in the region, Uy said, will help students update with “the latest developments in the respective fields and gain a competitive advantage in the very competitive job market”.

Together with Usep Obrero campus are other SUCs in Davao Region which could benefit from the Free Wi-Fi program. These include Usep campuses in Mintal, Paquibato, Tagum, and Mabini, University of the Philippines - Mindanao in Calinan (UPMin), Davao de Oro State College campuses in Compostela, Montevista and New Bataan, and Davao del Norte State College in Panabo City, Davao del Norte.

Free Wi-Fi will also be installed in Monkayo College of Arts, Sciences and Technology, Kolehiyo ng Pantukan, Samal Island CIty College, Davao del Sur State College - Sulop Extension, and Davao Oriental State University campuses in Mati and San Isidro.

Uy added free wi-fi connections will also be installed in other areas in Davao Region such as in Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Camp Panacan Hospital, 56 Infantry Battalion (IB) - IP Student Foundation in Talaingod, Davao del Norte and 10th ID Hospital in Mawab, Davao de Oro. ICE
