Lawmaker lauds 'hero' cop in Basilan ferry fire

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO Patrol Partylist Representative Jorge Bustos lauded the heroic act shown by Police Lieutenant Ricardo Juhan during a recent ferry fire incident in Basilan.

Juhan reportedly saved at least seven of his fellow passengers when MV Lady Mary Joy 3 caught fire in the middle of the sea while en route to Jolo, Sulu from Zamboanga City on March 29.

Bustos said the swift response of Juhan even in the face of danger and adversity brought another chance in life to the people he saved.

“Your commitment to serving and protecting others while risking your life and limb is a stark reminder to the public of the dedication of our police force in ensuring the safety of our citizens at the expense of their own,” he said.

Bustos, a former police officer, added that Juhan’s heroic deeds have given honor not only to the Philippine National Police Academy, but also to the entire law enforcement officers.

“You are a true hero, and we are proud to have you as a member of the police force. Your unwavering dedication to duty knows no bounds,” he said.

As of April 2, at least 29 of the 225 individuals aboard MV Lady Mary Joy 3 reportedly died and seven are still missing.

The Maritime Industry Authority on Friday said it has launched on March 31 a marine safety investigation into the cause of the fire.
